Watching the Detectives. Again.

[Читать на русском языке]

I have already written about the detective series once. Here it was (Russian only, sorry). Now it is time to return to this thrilling converstasion: I watched quite a few detective series this year and some of them worth mentioning.

Well, for many of us the year started with the 3rd season of Sherlock and that means that the year started very disappointingly. I don't really see the point in dwelling upon details. I believe that you'd either agree with me on this without polemics; or you loved this season, the series, Benedict Cumberbatch and the Universe he exists in and won't listen a word against it (good for you).
So Sherlock 3rd season (3 episodes) - unsatisfactory due to dramatical drop into sentimental fan service (and high expectations probably).

Father Brown is another British TV series based on classic detective stories. I read the stories during New Year holidays. I had some reservation against them because the main character is a clergy man (that's probably why I never read them before) but during some major reorganisation of home library I found a couple of books and read them. Since they were published in Soviet times later I had to read a couple of stories in English just to check if they really have that strong socialistic undertone... The point is I was quite into them and was delighted to find out that there is a new TV series based on Chesterton made by BBC. I loved it, it was charming. Seriously. The crimes were inventive, the characters loveable, the actors brilliant (well, you can get used to Lady Felicia screaming every time when she finds the body...), the mood was consistent and last but not least: the Sherlock/Watson formula we all so fed up with isn't here actually, not really.
I'd say you can give Father Brown (2 seasons, 20 episodes alltogether) a try if a cozy rural detective serial sounds like your cup of tea.

The Wrong Mans I believe falls under "detective" category. It is a complicated detective story all right, it's just so hilarious! Brilliant actors' perfomances as well. The Wrong Mans (6 episodes) is a very well done darkish comedy detective.

Blackpool (6 episodes) is an unfortunate marriage of a detective and a musical. The Escape Artist (3 episodes) is simply boring. Don't really know anyone who would enjoy them; well, unless you are a hard core fan of David Tennant (which I am not)...

Next one is out of chronological order - I am watching it now. Endeavour... Well, I haven't read any Colin Dexter's novels; I haven't watched Inspector Morse series. Maybe I should (read and watch both). So I can't tell you how true the film adaptation to the literary base, or how is young inspector Morse (Endeavour) related to his older incarnation... What I can tell you is that I love this series so far. Atmospheric would be the first word to describe it with; somewhat slow moving yet captivating. Sympathetic characters, complicated crimes, splendid soundtrack...
Endeavour (2 seasons, 9 episodes only) - I think I'll keep it and watch again when I am under the weather and in desperate need of some British television.

Now, across the ocean, to US detectives... Nope, not yet. The thing I love about British TV series generally is that they are not long. They are reasonable. You don't feel that you are wasting your life, you are not bored out of your mind (but still watching because there is always something: a cliff hanger, the major story arch, a criminally handsome main character maybe).

Well, I have recently watched two detective serials from US. First would be Perception. You won't believe it: I actually couldn't remember the title and had to google "detective serial schizophrenic professor"... This one is difficult. What can I say? Amateur brilliant detective helps police/FBI whatever represented by a beautiful women. I mean again... Like it never gets old! After Castle, Mentalist, Psych etc. Anyway I watched the first season (10 episodes) and generally liked it. In a first few episodes plots and crimes were very improbable, but it got better later; and the season finale was very beautiful mindish and it's a compliment I guess... I started to watch the second season but then I dropped it because it suddenly seemed extremely inappropriate to exploit the mental illness of the main character ("schizophrenic professor" remember?). I am not really sure what caused my feelings to change so abruptly, maybe the characters got more schematic, maybe the stories got repetitive. I am not even sure that it is actually wrong to show a mentally challenged character capable of professional career and, well, crime solving. I am sure though that I am not watching it any more.
Perception (3 seasons, 31+ episodes, ongoing) maybe you should check it yourself, I don't know.

The last one for today is White Collar. This one is easier. I liked the characters and the actors who played them, white collar crimes were new and interesting, chemistry between main characters (not the Sherlock/Watson formula, thank goodness), beautiful women, it is all good. It just NEVER ENDS. I stopped watching it at some point but I would still recommend to watch a season or two to almost anyone, it's fun.
White Collar (5 seasons, 75? episodes, ongoing) Enjoy!

Thank you for your attention & your opinions and recommendations are most welcome!
